Ella
Sri Lanka's Mountain Escape
Uva Province · 1,000 m elevation · 180 km from Colombo
At an elevation of around 1,000 metres in Sri Lanka's Uva Province, Ella is a small hill-country town of extraordinary visual appeal. Surrounded on all sides by rolling tea estates, mist-draped jungle, and dramatic mountain ridges, it provides a cool and refreshing contrast to the heat of the coast or the cultural intensity of the ancient cities further north.
Ella only rose to global traveller prominence in the 2010s, when photographs of the Nine Arch Bridge — a 1921 colonial viaduct spanning a jungle ravine — began circulating widely. The bridge, with a train crossing the arches against a backdrop of green hills and tea bushes, became one of Sri Lanka\'s most shared travel images. But Ella offers much more than one photogenic structure: it is a genuine hiking destination, a gateway to the tea country, and one of the best starting points for Sri Lanka\'s most scenic train journeys.
The village itself remains small and walkable, with guesthouses, cafes, and restaurants clustered along the main street. The atmosphere is relaxed and genuinely friendly — Ella attracts independent travellers who tend to stay longer than planned.
The Nine Arch Bridge
Built in 1921 during British colonial rule, the Nine Arch Bridge — formally called the Demodara Nine Arch Bridge — is one of the finest examples of colonial railway engineering in Asia. The structure spans 91 metres across a forested gorge using nine semi-circular arches of solid brick and cement, constructed without a single piece of steel reinforcement. The lead engineer, H.F. Marwood, reportedly redesigned the bridge at the last moment when a shipment of steel from Britain failed to arrive due to the outbreak of the First World War.
The bridge is a 20-minute walk from Ella town along the railway tracks (walking on the tracks is local practice but requires caution — trains run at low speed through the area but the tunnels are narrow). The best viewing position is from the tea estate hillside above and to the west of the bridge, which requires a short scramble up a path through the bushes. Local boys often position themselves there to help direct visitors to the optimal photo spot.
Early morning (8:30–11:00 AM) offers the best light from the east, and the Colombo-bound morning train crosses the bridge with characteristic blue carriages. Afternoon light is softer and golden but comes from behind the bridge if you\'re at the standard viewpoint.
Hiking Around Ella
Little Adam\'s Peak (2.6 km one way)
The most popular hike from Ella town, Little Adam\'s Peak is a 1.5–2 hour return walk through tea estates to a summit with panoramic views over the Ella Gap — the valley that opens dramatically to the south towards the lowlands. The trail starts behind 98 Acres Resort and is well-signposted. The climb gains about 160 metres of elevation, making it accessible for most fitness levels. Go early for cloud-free views; by late morning the valley frequently fills with mist.
Ella Rock (9 km return)
A more challenging full-morning hike to the highest peak visible from Ella town. The trail begins at the railway cutting south of Ella station, crosses the tracks, and climbs steeply through pine forest and jungle to a rocky summit at 1,041 metres. The views from the top — encompassing Ella Gap, the southern lowlands, and the tea-covered hillsides — are extraordinary. Allow 3–4 hours return. The trail is partially unmarked; a local guide (available for hire in Ella town) is recommended.
Ravana Ella Falls
Sri Lanka\'s widest waterfall, Ravana Ella, drops 25 metres over a broad basalt cliff face about 6 km south of Ella town on the A23 highway. The falls are accessible by tuk-tuk (10 minutes from Ella) and popular for swimming in the pool at the base. The surrounding area features the Ravana Ella Cave — mythologically associated with the Ramayana legend — and a viewpoint over the waterfall from above. Best visited after wet season (October–December) when flow is at its strongest.
Tea Estates and Factory Tours
Ella sits in the heart of Uva Province, one of Sri Lanka\'s three main tea-producing regions alongside Nuwara Eliya (Dimbula) and the Kandy hill country. The Uva style is bold and brisk, typically medium-bodied with a characteristic astringency that tea connoisseurs highly prize. The climate here — with strong monsoon winds from both the southwest and northeast — stresses the tea bushes in a way that concentrates flavour in a phenomenon known as the Uva weather.
Several working tea estates near Ella offer factory tours where visitors can walk through the production process from withering racks to rolling machines, fermentation rooms, and drying chambers. The Newburgh Green Tea factory and the Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory both offer guided tours and tastings. Most tours last 30–45 minutes and cost a nominal fee.
A walk through the tea estate rows between Little Adam\'s Peak and the village at any time of day — watching the Tamil tea pickers moving through the rows with their wicker baskets — gives a direct encounter with an industry that has shaped Sri Lanka\'s landscape, economy, and identity for nearly 175 years.
Getting to Ella
By train: The train from Colombo Fort to Ella is a genuine travel experience in its own right. The route via Kandy and the Uva highlands passes through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in South Asia — deep ravines, arched viaducts, tunnels cut through granite ridges, and an endless procession of tea-covered hillsides. The Udarata Menike (5:55 AM from Colombo Fort) and Podi Menike (8:45 AM) both serve Ella. Book reserved second-class or the observation car well in advance, especially during the December–February season.
By private car: From Negombo or Colombo, the A1 highway through Nuwara Eliya reaches Ella in 4.5–5.5 hours depending on traffic. The mountain road section from Nuwara Eliya is scenic but narrow and takes longer than the distance suggests. Having a private driver allows stops at Nuwara Eliya, viewpoints, and tea factories en route.
Most tour packages combine Ella with a train journey from Nuwara Eliya (1.5 hours) or Kandy (3.5 hours) — arriving by train and departing by road, or vice versa.
